How to Teach Math Word Problems Using Key Words
As a teacher, I've seen firsthand how tricky word problems can be for students. They get lost in the words and forget what math they need to do! That's why I think using "keywords" is a great way to help.
Keywords are like clues that tell students which operation to use: add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Here are some ideas to make learning keywords fun and effective:

- 1. Keyword Chart: Make a big, bright chart with common keywords and the math signs they go with. For example, "total" usually means "+".
- 2. Keyword Bingo: Play bingo! But instead of numbers, use keywords on the cards. I call out a word problem, and the kids mark matching keywords.
- 3. Keyword Matching Game: Like a memory game, use cards with keywords on one side and the math signs (+, -, x, ') on the other. Match them up!
- 4. Keyword Sentence Strips: Write words like "more than", "less than", "altogether" on strips. Kids arrange them to make word problem sentences.
- 5. Keyword Story Time: I read a story out loud, and the students listen for those keyword clues to figure out what the math problem is.
- 6. Keyword Scavenger Hunt: Hide keywords around the room. Students find them and use them to solve a word problem.
- 7. Keyword Jeopardy: Just like the game show! Different categories are based on keywords, and kids answer word problems.
